With narration by co-producer Steve McQueen (who also races in some of its segments), director Bruce Brown (best-known for his poetic surfing documentary, Endless Summer) takes us into the incredibly varied and physically demanding world of motorcycle racing. Shot during a two-year period and edited from over 150 hours of footage, the film sets a new standard in motorcycle racing photography, and the film’s action is enhanced by Dominic Frontiere’s musical score. Along with other types of racing, Moto-Cross racing from the wilds of northern Canada (where wheels have two-inch steel spikes for traction in ice) to the Mojave desert is shown. While some European motorcycle racing is shown, such as the English Trials, most of the film concentrates on the American racing scene. Footage of the day-to-day life of McQueen, sportsman Malcom Smith and champion Mert Lawwill, as they participate in the racing circuit, helps to tie the film together. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi Guide

In 1971, Bruce Brown and his son Dana filmed a documentary featuring the rev and roar of the racetrack. The project was a success, earning the men an Academy award nomination. Twenty-eight years later, the two are back with another ode to speed, On Any Sunday Revisited. While the video features some of the same footage, most of it is entirely new. Brown includes memories from David Aldana, Chuck Palmgren, Sammy Tanner, Met Lawwill, Eddie Mulder, Skip Van Leeuwen, and Gary Nixon. The film explores the making of On Any Sunday with special concentration on star racer Steve McQueen. For fans of the first track epic, On Any Sunday Revisited is a great way to relive the fast-paced drama. ~ Sarah Ing, Rovi
In this documentary on motorcycle racing, the sequel to On Any Sunday, interviews with various racing masters are interspersed with races in just about every imaginable environment: dirt, sand, hills, tracks, valleys – everywhere a motorcycle can function. The racing and the interviews make up most of the footage, occasionally complemented by historical shots and a few bloopers. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A late bloomer, Edmonia Jarrett came to jazz at the age of 57. Legal at any Age is her second album. Her first, Live, Live, Live, also done for MNOP, was released in 1997. At first hearing, the listener may be taken aback by Jarrett’s voice This is not the sweet, pure sounding voice of a dreamy chanteuse. Instead, Jarrett’s low, sort of rough vibrato displays life’s experiences on the vocal chords, much like Carmen McRae toward the end of her career. This emotive quality is quite evident on Edith Piaf’s classic torch song “If You Love Me,” enhanced by the excellent vibes playing of Susan Pascal. The song with the obligatory Latin beat is “How Am I to Know,” which doesn’t lend itself all that well to that rhythmic pattern, despite the valiant percussive efforts of Ernesto Pediangco. Jarrett’s gospel background comes through in the Brook Benton/Clyde Otis “Endlessly.” The highlights of the album are the two duets with the estimable Freddy Cole. Cole and Jarrett sound so good together they should collaborate on a full album of songs. Legal at any Age is loaded with good players, veteran and not so veteran. The two bass players, Andy Simpkins and Buddy Catlett have enough years of jazz-playing experience between them that their mere presence gives the album credibility. Simpkins’ bass is the sole accompaniment to Jarrett’s “Come Rain or Come Shine.” Floyd Standifer, an under-recognized player, displays his muted, lyrical trumpet on “Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams.” Larry Fuller’s softly caressed piano is heard on most cuts. Jarrett got started in the jazz singing business rather late in life. But with her second album, she is making up for lost time. ~ Dave Nathan, Rovi Performers: Susan Pascal – Vibraphone; Andy Simpkins – Bass; Brian Kirk – Drums; Buddy Catlett – Bass; Ernesto Pediangco – Percussion; Floyd Standifer – Trumpet; Freddy Cole – Vocals; Geoff Cooke – Bass; Jim Sisko – Trumpet; Joshua Wolff – Piano;
Recorded in October of 1968, Any Day Now marks Joan Baez’s first foray into the recording studios of Nashville, armed with an entire program of Bob Dylan’s material and backed by a stellar cast of Music City’s finest session players. Dylan himself, coming out of an imposed exile after a motorcycle crash, had issued only one recording since 1966′s Blonde on Blonde; his low-key “comeback” outing, John Wesley Harding, released in December of 1967, had also been recorded in Nash Vegas with some of the same A-list players. Baez’s interpretations on this double album are simply stellar. Her empathy for the material, her keen understanding of Dylan’s sound world, and her own glorious voice brought another dimension to these 16 songs and, if anything, extended their meanings. There is no greater interpreter of Dylan’s music, and while evidence of that certainly was offered on earlier recordings (such as 1967′s Joan), the verdict was solidified here. The album’s most famous track is “Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word,” and because of the definitive performance of it here, it has basically belonged to Baez ever since. Another fine choice is “Walls of Redwing,” a tune Dylan rarely performed and no one had yet recorded. Baez’s read of “Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands” brings its full complexity to the fore. Though Dylan later confessed (after Joan and Bob split) to writing it for his wife, Sara, on the album Desire, there is plenty in the song that alludes to his relationship with Baez. Her version of the song is almost identical in length (11:15 to Dylan’s 11:22) and is utterly beguiling. Likewise, her a cappella approach to “Tears of Rage,” which immediately follows, is a beautiful version with a strangely fascinating placement. The bottom line is that Any Day Now, like Joan and David’s Album, found Baez at an intensely inspirational and creative peak. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Fred Carter – Mandolin; Hargus “Pig” Robbins – Keyboards; Harold Rugg – Guitar; Jerry Kennedy – Guitar; Jerry Reed – Guitar; Joan Baez – Guitar, Vocals; Johnny Gimble – Violin; Pete Drake – Guitar (Steel); Stephen Stills – Guitar; Tommy Jackson – Violin

To be a reggae “singjay” is to tread something of a treacherous line, and to take some risks that your colleagues don’t: you have to ride the rhythm with the assurance of a deejay (“deejay” being used differently in reggae parlance than in the hip-hop world, where you would be called an MC) while at the same time delivering your rhymes with a certain amount of melodic interest, and on pitch. The British vocalist Chukki Starr had been treading that line with aplomb for roughly 15 years when Most Wanted was released. It’s actually a compilation drawing on material dating back as far as the 1990s, though the songs’ quality and the modern roots vibe are both so consistent that virtually none of these tracks sound dated in any way. Starr has always insisted on chatting in a strictly roots-and-culture style, and his producers’ rhythms reflect that preference; while the digitally clean production and sometimes sharply funky rhythms offer a nod to dancehall trends, the overall feel and the lyrics are both strictly conscious. At least half of the tracks on this collection would count as highlights on any other artist’s release: the nervous rhythm and urgent vocals on “How Me So Real,” the joyful vocal and swinging beat of “Greatest of Dem All,” the spare and heavy one-drop of “Mark of the Beast,” the Bob Marley rhythm reappropriated on “Forever Shall Praise” — not everything on the program rises to the same level as these, but everything at least comes close, making this one of the most exciting and satisfying reggae releases of 2010. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Chris O’Brien – Sequencing; Pierre Bost – Sequencing

On her seventh CD, blues-rocker Christine Santelli shows off her stylistic versatility with a varied program that includes a couple of excursions into country, a nod to New Orleans, a strange and carnivalesuqe number, and plenty of straight-up roots rock. The focus here is on her voice, which is interesting: at its best, it’s a dark, smoky, and richly textured instrument, while at its worst it can be almost painfully scratchy and raw. Santelli’s songwriting is grittily mature, and on highlight tracks like the sultry “Guilty,” the softly gorgeous “Brown Haired Girl,” and the straightforward blues-rock of “Sparrow,” the vulnerability of the lyrics and her intimate vocal delivery come together perfectly. Her sidemen are also worth noting; Tim Tindall’s basslines are self-effacing but utterly perfect on “Butterfly,” and Brian Mitchell’s barrelhouse piano adds a very nice swamp-boogie element to the title track. “Calgary” is built on a minimal and lovely arrangement that showcases Santelli’s voice at its roughest, an effect that detracts from the song in a few places, and the album-closing “On the Farm” sounds almost like a Hee Haw parody. But for the most part, this album is a solid roots rock winner. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Brian John Mitchell – Organ (Pump), Wurlitzer, Celeste, Accordion, Fender Rhodes, Organ (Hammond), Piano; Brian Mitchell – Accordion, Piano; Jason L. In the self-help guide MAGNIFICENT MIND AT ANY AGE psychiatrist Daniel Amen turns the reader`s attention to the fitness of their brains. Experts now realize the brain can change throughout life. However, most people focus more on achieving flat abdomens than on what "shape" our brains are in. After describing the parts of the brain and their functions and normal brain variations, Dr. Amen helps readers identify their own "type." He names chemicals and behaviors that can harm and those that can help brains and outlines holistic regimens for depression, insomnia, and other disorders. The book includes quizzes and checklists to help readers improve their own brain health.
In the annals of seafaring and exploration, there is one name that immediately evokes visions of the open ocean, billowing sails, visiting strange, exotic lands previously uncharted, and civilizations never before encountered — Captain James Cook.This is the true story of a legendary man and explorer. Noted modern-day adventurer Martin Dugard, using James Cook`s personal journals, strips away the myths surrounding Cook`s life and portrays his tremendous ambition, intellect, and sheer hardheadedness to rise through the ranks of the Royal Navy — and by his courageous exploits become one of the most enduring figures in naval history.Full or realistic action, lush descriptions of places and events, and fascinating historical characters such as King George III and the soon-to-be-notorious Master William Bligh, Dugard`s gripping account of the life and death of Captain James Cook is a thrilling story of a discoverer hell-bent on going farther than any man.

Rush Limbaugh is the most prominent figure in the conservative movement today. With almost 20 million listeners every week on more than six hundred stations, Limbaugh has a larger media platform than any other individual in the nation. And this is why he is so dangerous.       Despite refusing to uphold even the most basic standards of journalism, Rush has been given an extensive, wide-reaching platform with which to spew his venom. And spew it he does! In this book, author John K. Wilson uses the most damning evidence of all—Rush’s own words—to deliver the ultimate indictment of Limbaugh’s bankrupt ideology and how it embodies the decline of the conservative movement.      Wilson catalogs the world according to Rush—from the political conspiracies to his disdain for scientific evidence and apparent love of racist, sexist, and homophobic stereotypes—and shows how the radio personality poisons any rational political rhetoric with an endless stream of slurs, lies, and intimidation. Most revealingly, the author demonstrates how Limbaugh’s blustering, baseless proclamations and love for savage, personal attacks have had a chilling effect on both parties, as he viciously targets not only liberals but also any Republican who dares question one of his conclusions. Meanwhile, Rush’s viselike grip on the political arena has created a media monster so powerful that even liberal commentators are forced to engage with him and his polarizing discourse.     The Most Dangerous Man in America reveals Rush Limbaugh to be just that.  No matter what you thought about the man before, you will never feel the same way about him again.

ZZ Top had reached the top of the charts before, but that didn’t make their sudden popularity in 1983 any more predictable. It wasn’t that they were just popular — they were hip, for God’s sake, since they were one of the only AOR favorites to figure out to harness the stylish, synthesized grooves of new wave, and then figure out how to sell it on MTV. Of course, it helped that they had songs that deserved to be hits. With “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs,” they had their greatest set of singles since the heady days of Tres Hombres, and the songs that surrounded them weren’t bad either — they would have been singles on El Loco, as a matter of fact. The songs alone would have made Eliminator one of ZZ Top’s three greatest albums, but their embrace of synths and sequencers made it a blockbuster hit, since it was the sound of the times. Years later, the sound of the times winds up sounding a bit stiff. It’s still an excellent ZZ Top album, one of their best, yet it sounds like a mechanized ZZ Top thanks to the unflaggingly accurate grooves. Then again, that’s part of the album’s charm — this is new wave blues-rock, glossed up for the video, looking as good as the omnipresent convertible on the cover and sounding as irresistible as Reaganomics. Not the sort the old-school fans or blues-rock purists will love, but ZZ Top never sounded as much like a band of its time as they did here. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Billy Gibbons – Vocals, Guitar; Dusty Hill – Vocals, Bass; Frank Beard – Drums
